SOCH Welcomes Certified Nurse-Midwife

Kathy Porsch, BSN, MSN, CNM, a certified nurse-midwife with extensive experience caring for women from pregnancy and childbirth through post-menopausal care, has joined the exceptional team of professionals specializing in care for women at SOCH.

"Adding the services of a midwife is part of SOCH’s commitment to provide the women in our community with comprehensive services that focus on their individual needs and preferences," said Todd Liu, MD, chairman of the Department of OB/GYN at SOCH. "Kathy is a welcome addition to our team, and I know that our patients will benefit from her compassionate care and expertise in women’s health."

A midwife is a nurse who has received specialized training in caring for women throughout a normal pregnancy, childbirth and post-partum care. Midwives are also primary care givers dedicated to providing general women’s health care, with emphasis on disease prevention, health counseling and education.

"I specialize in care for healthy women, including normal pregnancy and childbirth,"said Kathy Porsch. "I am trained to recognize when there are complications or health issues that require more extensive treatment, and I work in tandem with the OB/GYN to assure that each patients receives the appropriate level of care for their situation."

Ms. Porsch earned her BSN from Thomas Edison University, and her MSN from the University of Pennsylvania. She earned a certificate in midwifery from the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to becoming a midwife, Ms. Porsch served as a public health nurse and then a public health supervisor for the Ocean County Health Department. Following her certification as a midwife, she worked at Temple University Hospital, then at private OB/GYN practices in Toms River.

Ms. Porsch, who lives in Manahawkin, is looking forward to being closer to home and providing care for the women in her community.
