Specialized Maternity and Pediatric Care at SOCH

Southern Ocean County Hospital opened its Maternity Pavilion in 1998, and since then has made a commitment to bringing an impressive array of obstetric and pediatric specialists from some of the nation’s finest medical schools to the southern Ocean County area.

The highly skilled team of physician specialists at Southern Ocean County Hospital include board-certified obstetricians and a full complement of neonatologists, reproductive endocrinologists, pediatric cardiologists and pediatricians. These doctors are the hallmark of a multi-disciplinary team of caregivers that includes experienced registered nurses who come together to provide the best possible care to our growing families.

For those who are expecting, our obstetricians provide their unique of care, every step of the way, to assure optimum health for both mother and baby. If a problem is detected with the fetus, a neonatologist may be consulted during the pregnancy and after delivery. Neonatologists are board-certified pediatricians who have additional training in newborn intensive care. They may be called upon to diagnose and treat newborns with breathing disorders, conditions related to premature birth, infections and birth defects. They also provide care to babies after cesarean sections or other deliveries that require medical interventions.

Once a baby is born in the Maternity Pavilion at SOCH, pediatric care begins with a thorough examination of the newborn by a board-certified hospital pediatrician. This will most likely be the first of many exams provided by SOCH pediatricians, who are trained to care for the specialized health needs of children as they grow towards adulthood.

Though it is not common, heart disease can affect the youngest members of our community. Some abnormalities can be detected while the fetus is still in the womb. A pediatric cardiologist is specially trained to attend to the needs of infants and children who are affected by acquired or congenital heart disease. A pediatric cardiologist can perform fetal diagnosis of congenital heart disease, routine outpatient assessments and testing and, when required, intervene with a variety of treatment protocols.
