The Institute for Healthcare

Improvement’s (IHI) 100K

Lives Campaign

SOCH is part of this national program, which is designed to improve quality and patient safety at thousands of hospitals across the country.  The campaign’s goal is to save 100,000 lives by implementing changes in care that have been proven to prevent avoidable deaths.  The IHI campaign is endorsed by a number of prestigious, national organizations, including The American Medical Association, The American Nurses Association, The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the The Joint Commission.

Since joining this campaign, SOCH has implemented many of the IHI’s quality improvement recommendations, which include:

  • Improving Care for Heart Attack Patients by promptly administering aspirin and beta-blockers, and providing smoking cessation counseling.
  • Preventing Harmful Reactions to Medication by Compiling and reconciling a listing of all of a patient’s home medications ensures that the physician is prescribing the right medication and the correct dosage at admission, before being transferred to another unit and at discharge.
  • Preventing Blood Stream Infection in Patients who have a Central Line inserted, which is an IV inserted into a large vein to deliver medication, by taking extra precautions to ensure a sterile environment.  These include making sure healthcare professionals who are inserting the central line use hand-washing, and wear sterile gloves and a full gown.
  • Preventing Surgical Site Infections by delivering antibiotics before the operation, maintaining glucose levels, oxygenation and temperature control and avoiding shaving hair at the surgical site.
  • Preventing Pneumonia for Patients on a Ventilator by implementing proven strategies, such as elevating the head of the hospital bed.
